Texas'
coast has as fascinating a history as that other
state. Florida might have had a few more shipwrecks, but why would anyone brag
about what bad sailors they were? Besides, we used to have our own Navy and actually
hired our ships and sailors out to Yucatan to protect them from Mexican ships.
Can Florida say that?
LaSalle liked the Texas Coast so much, he arranged
to have his men kill him there. There are bridges, lighthouses, ferries and piers,
jetties, seagulls and men without peers. Galveston and Corpus Christi,
remain the popular centers, but the tranquility of places like Palacios,
Rockport, and Fulton make you rethink your home on the range. Even
the Comanches found time to pay the coast a visit. Although the seaport of Linnville
didn't survive the visit.
Cattle
Barons like Shanghai Pierce were just barely inland, and Mrs. King set up
a house in Corpus Christi so that the kids might attend school and soak up a little
more civilization than they were getting on the Ranch.
