Artist:

Ethel Magafan

Ethel Magafan and her twin sister Jenne suppored themselves by mural commissions in the 1930s. Born in 1916, Jenne died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1952. Both women married artists and moved to the art colony in Woodstock, New York where they worked until their respective deaths, Ethel dying in 1993.

Ethel studied under muralist Frank Mechau and her work includes murals in Auburn, Nebraska (Threshing), Denver (Horse Corral) and Madill, Oklahoma (Prairie Fire). The sisters worked together and Jenne’s mural entitled Cowboy Dance (Anson, Texas) is on the short list of favorites of Texas’ nearly ninety (original count) murals.
