Dear Texpert,
I live in Coleman
County. Red Steagall calls his band "The Coleman County Cowboys".
Why? He is not from here, and as far as I know, doesn't even visit
our area. - Roberts
Dear Roberts,
Finding no connections to Coleman County in his various bios, I've
forwarded your query to the man himself. I look forward to his reply.-Texpert
Dear Texpert,
Red Steagall named his band the Coleman County Cowboys in honor
of his favorite aunt, Audra Coleman. He has appeared in Coleman
County, Texas, only one time in his career. If Ms. Roberts is interested
in hiring him to appear in her county, please have her contact Red
Steagall's agent at our email address. Thanks! - Gail Steagall

Dear Texpert, I am Doug's 'internet deprived' aunt. I have a client
in Dallas that is building a home. They are fond of the Texas
hill country style of architecture, both for interiors & exteriors.
I know there is a major German influence. If, however, I could locate
some good information on residential style it would a huge feather
in my hat! It is not that important, but if you could give me some
direction it would be much appreciated. - Dee Ann
Dear Dee, Find
a copy of Clovis Heimsath's PIONEER TEXAS BUILDINGS, A Geometry
Lesson. It's map leads you to the pictured structures, which are
mostly German. Also, browse your local library, then come to Austin
and let me show you around! - Texpert

Dear Texpert,
where can I learn about central texas architecture? Thanks.- Doug
Dear Doug, The
best place to learn about Central Texas architecture is in Central
Texas! By that I mean, go to the buildings that you like most,
ask someone when or by whom they were made, then check the library
or Internet for those syles or builders. We've got at least two
major influences here: German and Spanish, who both took advantage
of the abundant limestone to create beautiful structures. General
questions get general answers--what specifically did you have in
mind? - Texpert

Dear Texpert,
I am trying to find out where the slang term "Texas Tea" for oil
came from and what it means. "Black Gold" is self-explanatory but
"Texas Tea" has me stumped. Does it mean that oil is so abundant
in Texas that we drink it like tea? If you could help, I'd appreciate
it. I am doing this research for a 2nd grade class.

Whoa! I'm still looking for this one, but I'll wager you're on the
right track! - Texpert

Dear Texpert...I
Am Trying to locate two old steamboat towns called "Old Cincinati"
and "Newport"Texas. They were on the bank of the trinity river in
the 1800's. I would like the exact location. - Ginger
Dear Ginger,
From the Handbook of Texas: NEWPORT, TEXAS (Trinity County). Newport,
a port on the Trinity River just west of Pecota [east of Trinity,
TX] in Trinity County, was established around 1854 by Joseph Werner,
an immigrant from Frankfurt, Germany. The settlement flourished
briefly as a stopping point for riverboats in the years just before
the Civil War. With the arrival of the railroads in the early 1870s,
Newport declined in importance and was apparently abandoned. By
the early 1880s it was no longer shown on maps. My guess is that
these places were inundated by Livingston Reservoir. CINCINNATI,
TEXAS. Cincinnati, on the Trinity River in northern Walker County,
was a riverport and an important ferry crossing during much of the
nineteenth century. The settlement was founded in 1837 by James
C. DeWitt. County map shows Cincinnati Cemetery across the Trinity
from Horseshoe Lake, but no road to it. Hope this helps! - Texpert

Hi Texpert. My name is Noel. I was born and raised in Creedmore,
Tx. This is located just outside of Austin and about 16 miles before
you get to Lockhart. My friend lives on a road named Williamson
Rd. and just before you enter his driveway, off to the left there
is an old, deserted cemetary. Another friend of mine was curious
one day and decided to cross the fence one day. There were many
tombstones and everything was written in Spanish. Is there any way
I could find out if there are any living relatives of these people
because like I said it was abandoned and I would like to go in there
and clean the place up. I wouldn't want anyone to abandon me like
that. - Noel
Dear Noel, I
found one Vasquez cemetery southwest of Williamson Road, almost
in Hays County. Records for many rural Travis County graveyards
are housed at the Austin History Center, 9th & Guadalupe streets.
Their phone: 499-7480. As to any living relations, you might ask
at nearby San Francisco Catholic Church: 243-1404. Hope this helps!

There is a town
South of Dallas whose name starts with a W and has a Native American
sound to it. Can you tell me what it is? It's not Waco. Also, it's
very small and it isn't even listed on this site. - Vampy
Dear Vampy,
Could it be Waxahachie? From a Native American word meaning buffalo
cow, it's the seat of Ellis County. - Texpert
TE editor's
note: It's listed now. Click here to get Waxahachie
town page.

Hi
Richey, I am trying to get an exact address for the Mt. Moriah Church
and Cemetery in Omaha Texas. Like a Country Road Number. Thanks,
Sharon
Dear
Sharon, Mt. Moriah Church and Cemetery is NW of Daingerfield off
Texas 49 between two branches of Boggy Creek. Not big enough for
its own post office, probably on a rural route. This is a few miles
S of Omaha in Morris County--hope it's the place!

Hi Texpert,
I spent summers outside Austin where Lakeway is now located. My
grandmother would take us kids to an abandoned gas station for tamales
(when we behaved) on the road to Lake Travis. Those Tamales were
the best!! I believe the name of the joint was Rosies Tamale house.
This would have been in 1969 and later. Is Rosie's still around?
A tamalie lover thanks you. - Teri Metz
Texpert replies:
Yep, it's still there in Bee Cave, at TX 71 & RR 620. She also has
locations in far north Austin (Research Blvd.) and in South Austin
on Oltorf. - Texpert
Archives:
I was thinking
spending my vacation collecting some silver from the Lost San Saba
mine. Where exactly is it? Thanks. - Henry in Colorado
Dear Henry,
Jim Bowie's silver mine is still lost near Menard, Texas. Over the
years, there's always rumors that someone found it and disappeared,
but nothing's for sure. Find a good write-up in J Frank Dobie's
"Coronado's Children." Then, come on to Austin and I'll take you
on a tour of that and other treasure sites hereabouts! - Texpert
