Book Ends

by David Knape

As I slow up
and everything becomes harder
I've become a slow reader

I no longer devour books
like I used to when I was young
now I struggle to get through one

it takes me forever to finish a book
even though I still love to read
I let them sit a long time
to age
as I myself am aging

I wonder if there will come a time when
(like my mother in her latter years)
I put aside the ways of the world and
give up reading entirely

I hope not
that would be like surrendering
like giving in to death

I hope my real life
is as satisfying as a good book
and that when the last page is turned
I am happy with the ending

accepting of the closing like
the ending of a good book.
