County Bridges

by David Knape

County road bridges with their steel trusses
and rusted beams spanned many a creek in Texas
In many counties there were the only architecture around. Worthy of a look, a drive over

There was excitement in their crossing
as cars could narrowly pass, and through their rickety railings, green mossy water loomed, looking ominous especially to a child holding mama's hand

Some bridges were wood planked and clapped and rattled as cars crept cautiously over them
You could hear the boards below tapping out their rythym as they were crossed
clap clap  clap clap  clap clap

County road bridges are now long gone
replaced with boring bridges that all look alike, their romance replaced with the coldness of concrete

Time rushed on and people rushed by
bringing with them
that awful thing known as progress

So county bridges that had lasted a hundred years
were pulled down and scrapped
By design, by desire, to go faster and faster
to get to a place sooner rather than
enjoy the ride, the view from a bridge

Having spanned a century
The county bridges made it easier for
progress to happen, and by their functional success
brought about their own demise.
