    Dry Rain

    by David Knape

    We had another
    dry rain today
    it clouded up
    it got real murky
    the temperature cooled
    it felt like something
    was going to happen
    but nuthin' ever did

    it was another "dry rain"
    a fake rain
    that should have been wet
but it just couldn't quite pull it off

    it wanted to rain
    it really did
but it couldn't quite get up
    enough steam to
    make it happen

    finally the clouds
    all went away
    and the sun returned
    as usual
    laughin' at us and
    ruinin' our expectations
chokin' the life outta anything green

we have had this happen so often
that I now think that "Dry Rain"
is listed by the National Weather Service
    as a weather phenomenon
    peculiar to Texas

    and farmers and ranchers
now talk about it in their cafes
and beer joints as they sit around the
    domino table

"We had a dry rain today",
one good ole boy would say-
"Really, how much did you get?"
    the reply.
