FLIES BY NIGHT

by David Knape

Flies seem to love, find great delight
in buzzing heads by day or night
how bold they are to have the nerve
to land on plates when food is served

How curious, indeed quite queer
they know just when to disappear
how often when a swatter looms
they somehow know to leave the room

They rub their hands, so nice and neat
as if they're getting set to eat
whatever dishes we protect
they get to those that we neglect

They fly right past us as we sit
get fiendish pleasure out of it
we may take umbrage as they pass
they disregard us, seem to laugh

How often flies make men discuss
the end of them, in dire disgust
and though routinely they are cussed
flies still make fools of all of us

Outsmarting flies is never quite
so easy when they are in flight
we pray to God to make it right
and guide our aim when last they light.
