GOING HOME

by David Knape

Exposed in hospital gown
all my extremities
all my modesty
and privacy

my individuality surrendered
down to the last personal item
I have nothing left
like a babe I have become again
naked and
completely dependent on others
I lay in my crib
wrapped in a white blanket
as attendants push and prod
stick and inject

after what seems like an eternity
I am given my release
freed from the bureaucracy of pain
I return to welcome nest of home
to rest and begin to write again

in my own clothes
I am my Self again
and with the wonderment of rebirth
am amazed at the joy of being home and
the pleasure of normalcy

so good to back home
with welcome walls and halls
and all the things
that make up who I am
peace comes with familiarity
all the little things mean so much

so good to be back home
so good to be back
to being me.
