Katrina

by David Knape
When the levees broke
and the river poured into the streets
there was no relief
only grief
as people watched
their dreams get carried away
in muddy menacing currents

standing homeless
in teeming steamy shelters
packed like sardines
all they could think about
was that their city was no more
where there had been land
was now a gulf of tears
they were underwater
fighting to breathe

yet as they had so many times before
they chose to pick up their lives
and go on
their property gone
but not their souls
for there was no destroying
the spirit of New Orleans

after Katrina
the city was not Easy
anymore
but its eternal song
would go on playing
inspiring people to help each other

on rooftops and rafts
they clung to hope
even more
clung to each other
which helped them to survive

hand in hand
shoulder to shoulder
they rebuilt their lives
knowing that together
they would be stronger than before

they rolled the dice
betting their future
on bigger levees
and even bigger dreams.
