    Lived Here All My Life

    by David Knape
I asked the local farmer man
    red of neck and face
how long he knew this spot of ground
    how long in this place,
    and in plainspoken honesty
    he answered quite concise
    said he lived here purposely
    darn near all his life

I asked him what became of it
the town now gone to seed
he said the railroad moved the town
    despite the local pleas,
the town was left in disarray
    no more people came
the town had simply gone away
    has never been the same

    I inquired how people felt
    what lesson had been taught
    without hesitation he replied
on that I've got one thought,
a man can search the whole wide world
can lust for fame and wealth
but always returns to where he began
    still searching for himself

It's not the courthouse square or trains
    that make a happy town
this place is better off without
    just take a look around,
    people seem the happiest
    when they are left alone
    raisin' crops and families
    pride and purpose grown

We don't make the news too much
    but still our future's bright
people take care of their own
do what they know is right,
and though we get passed over
most the time, to be polite
home is where the heart is, so
I've lived here all my life.
