The Mail Box

by David Knape

old mail box
battered
scraped
dents in its door
open to the cold wind
the blowing snow

birds try to make
nests here

lizards hide
in dark crevices

how sad a face
on this weathered mail box
standing so forlorn
like a panhandler
on a dreary street corner

yet it has
a certain pride displayed
an American flag tacked
to its rusty side

a small touch of cheer
it waves in the wind
the flag says I'm here still
standing strong

broken holder of
yesterday's news
stuffed with
out of date circulars
crass pleas for cash

hold on
while you can
remind us of our past

we still trek out to you
like an old friend who needs attention
who has earned our affection

not giving up on you
still keeping faith
still expecting
the unexpected.
