    Momma Always Said

    by David Knape
    "Momma Always Said"
    how familiar is that saying
to all of us with loving mothers
how many times have we heard
    the phrase expressed

    for it is the mother
    who raises us
and teaches us the fundamentals of life
giving us our physical and moral compass

    from our first baby steps
to our stepping out on our own
mothers are the ones who are always there
    teaching and telling
    offering support and encouragement
    band-aids and kisses

how sad it must be for those without mothers
they never get an honest chance at life
and are burdened with fear and insecurity
    their whole psyche damaged by
    the want of mother's love

all that is good stems from mothers
they are the glue that hold our world together
and bind us to each other
    when mom's pass away
    the family moves apart
    relationships diminish
and it is never the same

their passing leaves a chasm in the heart
yet ever their words remain with us,
    like landmarks guiding us
so we do not lose our way
each day we hear their admonitions
    "Momma Always Said"
ringing in our minds and on our lips

    A mother's words live on
    long after they are gone
and while years pass and lives forever change
    still we hear them speaking
    like echoes from the past

    "Momma Always Said"
    A fitting tribute to
    their eternal love.
