    Mud Daubers

    by David Knape

    Inside the two-holer
    the mud daubers roamed
    it was in the outhouse
    they made their mud homes
    Each trip to the hopper
    was a trip to remember
    them wasps could make going
    a hazardous adventure

    Momma done told us
    everything has a purpose
but the sting of a wasp
    made us all really nervous
We'd swat down their mud nests
    and fill the cracks in
    get rid of 'em once
    but they'd come back again

    Now people don't use them
    old outhouses no more
    they all moved to town
    got plumbing indoors
    They're missin' the real life
    are a little bit poorer
    when the old crescent moon
    ain't gracin' their door

    I feel sorry for people
    who didn't live back then
    they missed out on daubers
and the fun of dodgin' them
    These fancy indoor toilets
    ain't nearly as fun
    as the excitement we had
    on a fast midnight run

    Now times are a'changin'
they were good for a laugh
    mud daubers ain't flyin' through
    dark holes and wide cracks
    If you're cravin' excitement
    then cut 'em some slack
    build you an outhouse
    let the daubers come back.
