OLD STUMPS

by David Knape

From an gnarled old stump
comes new life
the progeny of ancient ancestors
who lived for thousands of years
until greedy men saw a profit
then acres and acres were cut down
hillsides stripped
a dollar gained was our great loss
the forest floor littered with their bodies

then stumps gave birth to new ideas
they could grow again
with recovered DNA
thanks to one man persisting
who gave new life to these grand old giants
he too just a stump
brought back to life
and given a mission to protect and preserve
to enrich Ourselves
and make our planet whole again

with the beauty of
these wondrous trees
who now have a chance
to grow again
to reach great heights
and lift our eyes and souls
towards the heavens
ghosts from the past
come back to life
commanding our silence
as we marvel at magnificence.
