The Only Child

by David Knape

The only child is sad they say
they have no one with which to play,
and basically it is inferred
they live in such a lonely world

Yet the only child indeed succeeds
they do not need society,
they find a way to deal with fate
indeed they learn to compensate

Imagination holds the key
they create their own reality,
as inwardly their thoughts recess
yet in those thoughts find happiness

Such children as we might expect
develop a high intellect,
their isolation never grieved
they find their friends in make-believe

Independence hones their skills
strong minds create still stronger wills,
in their way they understand
uniqueness comes from deep within

In confidence they know their hearts
their singleness sets them apart,
self-satisfied they only smile
so proud to be an only child.
