Poem In Past Tense

by David Knape

He stepped out of
the shower
and felt so good
to have washed away
all those sleepless nights
to have steadiness
beneath his feet
that feel of firmness
balanced in resolve
having come home from his
hospital bed
where he had lain prone
in pain most of the time
how good it felt
to be whole again
born again
with weight upon his feet
steps made toward the future
ready
to walk back into
his life

one part missing
another part gained.
