PRISONERS OF WAR

by David Knape

With senses beaten out of them
they pray to see loved ones again
blindfolded in their crowded pens
depression reigns, surrounding them

Ask if the sun will rise and lend
its rays of hope for these poor men
who cannot help but wonder when
help will ever come again

Chained and beaten, without friends
barred from all light, kept captive in
a cell that with their own filth brims
they endure their ghastly regimen

We can't imagine all their pain
most normal men would go insane
through tortuous months they still retain
their wits about them, in the main

With chains and shackles, they lie pinned
while captors prod with evil grins
day after day, it never ends
with desperation they contend

We'll never know what horror brings
the depth of their dire suffering
still somehow to life they cling
and through it all, their spirit rings

Let us then praise these gallant men
whose strength endures, will never bend
those heroes whose example brings
the blessing that the caged bird still sings.
