    The Smell Of Hay

    by David Knape

    The smell of hay
    blesses your nostrils
    and perks your senses
    to wonderful heights
    what glorious aroma
    the blending of grass
    and soil and rain

    a walk into a barn
    brings instant pleasure
    immediately excited
    by the presence of animals
    and the sweet smell
    of fresh cut hay

    Are we not jealous
    of the horses and cows
    that munch on hay slowly
    enjoying each strand of it
    grinding it down
    to its essential goodness

    you can understand
    why their ears stand up
    their noses twitch
    as the hand brings them
    a bale

    like women with chocolate
    kids with candy
    temptation to animals
    is squared
    in the woven beauty
    of a bale of hay.
