TIN ROOFS

by David Knape
Tin roofs
stained orange
by years of wear
mottled in the rusty patches
of passing seasons

these roofs remain
on ash gray barns
abandoned and left to slowly rot
grown over by the passage of time

rusted tin roofs
cover broken boards
leaning cedar posts
the musky smell of old hay and manure
all now cloaked in saddened silence
from a time that used to be

when men plowed stubborn clay
pushed through hard times
raised cotton and corn and
faithful families
with few tools
except determination and honest sweat

rust stained roofs give pause
to recall those who went before
who toiled these fields
swore at the weather and the heavens
yet swore they'd make
the land produce

now all that remains
of their hard labor is
these collapsing roofs
sustained by long ago memories
relics of a rusting past

may we pay our respects
to the strength of character
these old roofs convey

built to last
still hanging on
to yesterday.
