History in a Pecan Shell

First settled in the late 1840s, the community was first called Sardis. The town had a post office in 1858 that stayed open throughout the Civil War but closed soon thereafter.

Brothers Benjamin and Samuel Gholson had been early settlers and when a new post office was opened in 1887, the application was filed under their surname.

In 1890 Gholson had only 25 residents but tripled that number by the mid 1890s. The post office was again discontinued in 1905. Gholson settled into its role as a farming community and remained at less than fifty residents throughout the first seven decades of the 20th century.

After incorporating in the mid 1970s, things changed. After reporting 650 people in the late 1970s, a more realistic figure appeared for the 1980 census (263 residents).

In 1990 the figure was 692 which increased to 922 for the 2000 census.
