Glenn Heights

by Clint Skinner

Located sixteen miles south of Dallas, the town of Glenn Heights resides in northern Ellis County and southern Dallas County. It was founded during the late 1960s by a man named N. L. Craddock. He abandoned his career as a Dallas firefighter and opened a thirty-acre mobile home park. When the city of DeSoto made plans to annex his business estate, Craddock pushed for the incorporation of Glenn Heights and succeeded.

The town was incorporated on September 16, 1969 with a government consisting of a council and city manager. The following year, the population reached 257 then grew to 1,033 a decade later. In 1983, Glenn Heights became a member of Dallas Area Rapid Transit. Its founder became the city manager in 1985 and was elected again in 1988, 1990, and 1992.

The population during 2013 was 11,723. The year of 2015 brought the celebration of the town's 45th anniversary.

Today, the school system is divided into two parts. The Dallas County section belongs to the DeSoto Independent School District while the Ellis County section belongs to the Red Oak Independent School District.
