History on
a Pecan Shell
A community grew
alongside the tracks when the railroad arrived in 1872. The name of
the community (if there was one) has been lost to history. But in
1889, storekeeper McDaniel High circulated a petition for a post office
to be granted. He was sworn-in in early 1891 and the community started
appearing on maps as High, Texas shortly thereafter.
The community peaked between 1910 and 1915 when a telephone exchange
served 40-50 separate phones and businesses included a lumberyard,
icehouse, two grist mills and three stores.
By 1930, the population decreased to 92 residents and the post office
closed its doors shortly thereafter. It is now considered a "dispersed
rural community." |
