History in a Pecan
Shell:
It could be safely assumed that the name derived from a high
bank of the nearby Brazos River. Settled in the 1880s, the town picked up speed
in 1901 with the arrival of the Calvert, Waco and Brazos Valley Railroad.
Highbank's post office opened the following year and according to local legend
- the town had several hundred citizens and 15-20 businesses - several of them
saloons that closed during prohibition. The town's business district burned in
the mid 1930s and many of those affected rebuilt - but unfortunately they didn't
rebuild in Highbank.
Highbank's school merged with the Marlin
ISD in the late 1950s and the post office closed it's doors in the early 70s.
The store that housed the post office closed its door a short time later.
