History in a Pecan Shell

The Handbook of Texas, which mentions School Hill in the past tense, has seven lines of information which have been condensed into the following paragraph:

“Probably established in the late nineteenth century, the oldest graves in the cemetery date back to 1884. About 1900 a school was erected on a hill above the community and in 1935 the school had one teacher and twenty pupils.” In 1940 the community had a school, a church, a cemetery, and scattered dwellings. The school was consolidated with the Lingleville school in the 1940s.”

The Chuches of School Hill

Charlie Turnbo of Salado, Texas, whose family comes from the School Hill region has sent a wonderful history of the community - and the church that was the town’s anchor. We’re pleased to be able to reprint Mr. Trunbo’s history which is a close look - not only of School Hill - but a representational view of the entire region. The details and anecdotes with the photographs provided paint a vivid picture of the community's past. See The Chuches of School Hill
