History in a Pecan Shell

Settled prior to the Civil War, the community was once known as Baker’s Prairie. The name is said to come from the designation of a tribe of Indians. A post office was granted in 1880.

Throughout its history the town has been small. In 1884 there were 25 residents. In 1890 there were 50. It reached its zenith in 1904 with 116 people, returned to 50 by the mid 1930s and has stayed at that level.
