The Dubina Cemetery

The Dubina Cemetery is in dense shade. This is in stark contrast to other Catholic cemeteries in the area where trees are weeded out before they can establish roots. Some trees here originate directly from iron-fenced enclosures and the shade is so dense that undergrowth is not a problem.
cast-iron crucifix
A cast-iron crucifix. Found in many immigrant cemeteries in Texas and other states, they could be ordered from catalogs or from salesmen. Most came from foundries in St. Louis but others were actually ordered from "the old country."

Inscription at Dubina Cemetery entrance
There are many Czech inscriptions - including the one at the foot of the large crucifix at the cemetery entrance.

According to Richard Zelade's excellent book Hill Country - "The Czech legend at the [Dubina] cemetery entrance translates roughly as: "Here lies a large number of us who were sent to God. If you don't want to pray for us, then leave us alone." Hill Country
