History in a Pecan Shell

The town has a short history for being 148 years old. The Handbook of Texas states that it was “a social center for German settlers who moved to the area from Schumansville in 1860.”

It took 31 years to apply for and be granted a post office, but one was authorized in 1891. The population that year was a mere 20 residents, but the town did have a general store, cotton gin and a one teacher schoolhouse.

By the end of WWII Geronimo had two gins and the population had grown to 123. By the late 1960s it had grown to 279 and today (2017) the state map lists a population record of 1038 residents.
