History

H.
A. Loehman is widely regarded as the area’s first settler, arriving
around 1846 and building his home along the banks of Plum Creek.
The community had a post office briefly (1901-1903). Information about
the naming of the town is unavailable. During the 1930s Joliet had
a minor boom, but it’s proximity to Luling
and the size of the oil field quickly reduced the community back to
its former size (which began the decade with a mere 10 residents).
Pump jacks remain a part of the landscape. Today only a few houses,
a church and three cemeteries mark what was Joliet, Texas. |
