History in a Pecan Shell

Equidistant from both the Fayette and Austin county lines (3 miles) in northern top tip of Colorado County, the name comes from a solitary oak that grew in the middle of the community’s main intersection.

Once known as Pisek, the community moved to be near the Katy railroad’s railhead and when the railroad moved further toward Houston, the town moved back, taking the name Lone Oak in 1941 and dropping the name of Pisek which had been the post office designation.

Enough people still lived in Lone Oak for 20 of them to be counted in the late 1930s. In the mid-1980s Lone Oak had eighteen households and two stores. The 2000 census reported a population of 50 scattered around the vicinity.
