History in a Pecan Shell

Settled in the late 1850s, the community was named (as the name suggests) for a large solitary tree. After the Civil War a branch post office was opened.

In 1881 the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad arrived and by 1890 the town was bustling with 800 people served by nearly 40 businesses. By 1914 it had reached 1,200 and the number of businesses was around 60.

The population declined somewhat but the town entered the Great Depression with over 1000 residents. After WWII the population had shrunk to just over 700 residents served by 24 businesses. It had a slow decline to the current (2000) population of 521.
