History in a Pecan Shell

Founded sometime in the last quarter of the 19th Century, Holly was granted a post office in 1886 and at one time had several mills and three churches as well as a school. The 1890 census reported a population of 250, which was to be its high-water mark. Two years later the population had decreased to 100 and it fell to a mere 50 residents in 1896.

After a brief period with not a single business, a store and grist mill opened by 1914 although the post office was closed that year, leaving its 25 residents without mail service. The population remained at 25 through the Great Depression and WWII. 1948 reported the same figure. Over the next few decades there wasn't much more than scattered residences although the town is still shown on the county map. The census department counted 112 people living in the vicinity in the year 2000.
