COMMON SCENTS

by David Knape

The aroma of fresh bread
baking in the oven
filling the house with goodness
the smell of fresh-cut hay
drying in the field
sunshine come to earth
the scent of soap and water
after a long hot shower
fresh and fragrant and clean
the aroma of a roast in the oven
soaking in its own juices
tempting our senses-
making us anxious to eat
the smell of fresh sheets
crisp and crinkling
as we slide under into sleep
the smell of Honeysuckle
wafting from its white flowers
wrapping us in sweet embrace
just some of the smells
that make it good to be alive
to have this sense
in a mostly nonsensical world.
