THE HOUSE ON THE HILL

by David Knape

The old house sits up on the hill
between two cedars hid,
they say that's where it all began
where grandpa raised his kids,
Thehouse still holds itself with pride
how it glistens in the sun
it is our birthplace so to speak
where we all came from

So many years havecome and gone
still it stands upright
coming down the county road
it makes a lovely sight,
I think of all the children born
within its hallowed halls
and all the family history
still held withinits walls

Every time that I pass this way
I'm filled with some regret
recalling all theones I knew
and onesI never met,
All those good relations
raised on meager means
are in my recollection
the stuff of pleasant dreams

Uncles, aunts, and cousins
I deliberate on these
remembering all those stories
of the way it used to be,
Deep within this heart of mine
their spirits linger still
and I know they're looking down on me
from the house upon the hill

When I stop here, a single tear
runs down my cheek to find
the memories of all that was
stillplay upon my mind,
Memories areprecious things
within a heart instilled
how precious then the memories
of this house upon the hill.
