LITTLE COUNTRY CHURCH

by David Knape

You can see the spire
from a distance
like a lighthouse
guiding travelers to its shore

how it gleams in the sun
the purest of whites
a beacon on the prairie

its bell peals hauntingly
calling saints and sinners
to its always open door

people who find this place
think it is just a little country church
they have no idea
what art and beauty lies within

once entering
visitors are immediately struck
with a sense of reverence
a feeling of awe that comes from seeing
something so unique, so grand

within its painted walls and ceiling
its baroque beauty confirms
that something very special
happened in this place

people of all faiths and no faith
feel obliged to bend a knee in deep respect
in wonderment that
men in overalls and straw hats
could make a place as beautiful as this

inspired by its overarching grace,
but also by the fact that love
could be so greatly expressed

within this small community
in this little country church.
