OFF THE BEATEN PATH

by David Knape

Not many people go to Ammannsville
it is off the beaten path
as they say

unless of course there is
a funeral

few people live there now
the dead outnumber the living
yet

as families gather in black
and hug each other in grief
they feel that sense of homecoming
toward this hallowed ground

the line of oaks
the peaceful pond reflecting in the sun
the lines of granite stones
all remind those gathered
that we share
a common blood and bond

we come then
to walk these graves
to pay our respects
to shed a tear
to speak our sad regrets

and in our clumsy way
so remind the dead
of this important fact

the love they gave us
once upon a time

still endures
within our hearts.
