Off The Beaten Path

by David Knape

A trail
goes through the woods
overgrown now
with spring growth

it is barely visible
closed in and off
by green grass
grown knee high

grass so wet
with dew
it soaks through
pant legs and makes
boots change color
from light to dark

the trail
cannot hide itself
from men
who wander into woods
determined to find
rest and solitude

men who keep company
gladly with themselves
in silent harmony
with their surroundings

things will be found
more important than themselves

away in the woods
far off the beaten path.
