    One-Way Stop

    by David Knape

In Ammannsville, the cats can prowl
the dogs are free to bark and howl,
    cowslaydrowsy by the tank
the jail is closed, so is the bank

    This littleplace that most forgot
now has a sign, just saying STOP
one lonely sign shines bright in red
    guess Ammannsville ain't exactly dead

    In oursmall town, nuthin' begins
there's just two roads, one out, one in
and no one ever stays too long
most of 'em lost, keep movin' on

The STOP sign's only there for show
nobody pays a mind to it anyhow
besides no need to stop at all
the pace is already at a crawl

Nobody stops at our STOP sign
you can run clean through it most anytime
no point in stoppin', just because
there ain't no sheriff, and no laws

Most folks ignore, just roll on through
    this ain't no 6-lane avenue
and we don't need the revenue
a wreck might give ussomthin' to do

Now the wind's stopped turnin' the old windmill
and all's quiet here in Ammannsville
and even if we had a cop
nobody'd care, no crime to stop

We don't lack nuthin' but a hill
    it's peaceful-likein Ammannsville
no time zone 'cause thereain't no clock
if you come our way, prepare to Stop

We ain't far off of the main road
just follow that bunch of black-winged crows
just down the lane, a skip and hop
we'll wait for ya downat the One-Way Stop!
