THE PAINTED CHURCH

by David Knape
The church bell rings from old St. John's
and saints and sinners always come
to see the church and stare in praise
at grace and beauty there displayed

The painted church of Ammannsville
was built through joyful toil and skill,
a replica of Europe's heart
both god and man inspired the art

The altar rise, its greatest prize
has statues that seem true to life,
ornate carvings bless the eye
and painted arches touch the sky

What wonder it is just to see
the colors used, their intricacy
in fine detail, fine art displayed
in homage now, all come to pray

The old church with its painted hues
inspires all who travel to,
respect and honor it is due
for Czech forebears knelt in its pews

A mystery to understand
how a place so small could think so grand
and have the faith, indeed the will
to build this church of Ammannsville.
