True Love

by David Knape

With love
and a kind word
she brings him Advil
to soothe his aching bones
that stiffen in
the winter cold

he in turn
brings her breakfast
along with the morning paper
set by her place
at the kitchen table

she will lovingly
repair his jeans
or sew on a button
fix his favorite meal
without request

he will help her
turn the mattress
do the dishes
fold clothes

both know that love
is not just something
to be written or sung about
that romance is for the young

they have learned
love is fashioned from
unselfishness
little acts of kindness

as love grows older
it slowly changes
and becomes an expression
of caring
sacrifice and giving

love matures
and in its aging
gives comfort to lovers
who have slowly
but surely come to know

the meaning of
true love.
