TWO KIDS PLAYING IN A STORE

by David Knape

fidgeting
because they are bored
they pull things down
they upset the cart
a trail of merchandise
litters the aisle
their mother is about to pull her hair out

she is trying to concentrate
and decide which thing to buy
but she cannot focus
because the two kids are
out of control
tearing stuff up

she wants to scream at them
shake their little bodies
listen here you two
for Pete's sake
behave yourself
or...or...else

she notices an elderly woman approaching
who has witnessed the scene
she smiles at the boys
she smiles at the mother

the mother says
I'm sorry if they distracted you
I apologize for their behavior

the lady smiles again
do not worry young lady
be glad you have them
be happy with all they do
they are your blessing
embrace them
embrace your life

with a hint of a tear
she adds
I can only wish
I had two like them

they are the joy
I'll never know.
