History in
a Pecan Shell
El
Oso bears a resemblance to its near neighbor Zunkerville.
Both were established around the same time before 1920 and the fortunes
of both towns rose and fell on the cotton
crop. Both towns were centered around a store and gin and both towns
had a citizenry of less than 100. The record droughts of the 1950s
put many farms under, in turn closing the town’s store. Although it
is an estimate, El Oso reportedly had 50 residents through the mid
1960s. In the early 1970s a water supply company was established,
aiding many Karnes County
residents – and sparing El Oso from oblivion. |
