| Polish immigrant Bernard
Baruch Zakheim, originally an upholsterer, begun studying art in Europe after
WWI and requested political asylum
in the U.S. in 1920. After arriving in San Francisco, he continued his art training
at the California School of Fine Arts (which later became the San Francisco Art
Institute). He painted the library portion of the mural in San Francisco's Coit
Tower (Diego Rivera being another contributing artist) and painted "The History
of Medicine" at the University of California Medical Center. The post
office mural in Mineola, Texas is another of his works. In his later years
he became a sculptor, working in wood and stone. |
