- The Game

While
searching the Internet for information concerning Columbus
and Colorado County,
Colorado County Historian Bill
Stein repeatedly came across ads for this game. He sent for it
and it has been put in a display case near the Texas room of the Nesbitt
Library in Columbus.
It's long been known that Texas holds
a fascination for some Europeans. Germans have had a keen interest
in Texas - either due to their 19th Century
immigration or the guest-worker program of 1943 - 1945.
For whatever reason - a company in Germany has produced a board game
for people who want to live the adventure of early Texas
- just without hardships or irritable Comanches.
The box cover shows happy, hardworking immigrants staking claims,
looking both ways before crossing streams, and of course, enjoying
the cool crisp Texas weather.
The illustration does bear a slight resemblance to the Texas Colorado
River - it's the Swiss-looking snow-capped mountains in the background
that Texas Colorado Countians find amusing.
If this landscape was authentic, "Mount Giddings"
might rival Aspen as a ski resort and LaGrange
might have to find funding for an avalanche patrol.
