History in a Pecan Shell

Birdston, was settled sometime prior to the Civil War. A post office was opened in 1866 and the town had all the necessary components (sawmill, cotton gin and gristmill) to become a thriving town.

With a population of 250 in 1892, the town still held promise until around the turn of the century when Streetman was accepted as the regional railroad connection. The Birdston post office closed in 1909 and Birdston disappeared from maps.

About all that remains today is the Birdston Cemetery.
