History
in a Pecan Shell Established in 1912, the town name is thought to
be the surname of a local family. A post office was granted in 1913 and the town
later suppported a store, bank, and a hotel which is said to have been moved from
Hurley, Texas. In an old familiar story, the town was bypassed by the
railroad who decided in favor
of Muleshoe. The Janes post
office moved to Muleshoe in
1914, and when Muleshoe became
county seat, the Janes community joined the long list of Texas ghost towns.
