Subject:
Villa, Texas?
"I came across the Texas Escapes
website today. I have enjoyed reading about the local history of Mills
County. But I have a question. We live just off Hwy 183 just east
of the Mills/Brown
County line. When I use Google maps to look at that area and zoom
in, I have seen (on the south side of the highway) the label "Villa",
as if a town of Villa once existed there. But I've searched everywhere
I know to look, and can't come up with any information about a town
in Texas on Hwy 183 called Villa. I was wondering why the Google map
would have it on there if it never existed." - Respectfully,

Subject: Villa,
Texas
" Villa is
the name of a railroad siding between Zephyr
and Mullin. The current railroad right
of way has been in use since 1885. Villa (31.617604265460752, -98.73813997619365)
is indicated on the current USGS topographic map and on past maps
it has been listed as Villa siding.
The siding is in use today. I believe that railroads have a name for
all their sidings that often finds its way onto maps. I have found
no evidence that Villa was ever a town, whistle stop, had a post office
or depot." - Gregory Phillips, February 8, 2021 |
