History in
a Pecan Shell
It’s not often
a ghost town can be pinpointed to an exact location. In Copenhagen’s
case the exact location is the present-day Center Plains cemetery.
Center Plains was the original name of the would-be town –
but for some reason it was rejected when postal authorities received
the application. The post office department decided that Copenhagen
should be the name and in 1902 the Copenhagen post office opened it’s
doors.
The post office remained open until 1907. The promised arrival of
a railroad in Norfleet lured away
Copenhagen / Center Plains residents, creating a ghost town with two
names. |
