| History
in a Pecan Shell Originally called Wawaka when it was
settled in 1885, the town later moved (1919) three miles north to be on the railroad
- in this case, the Panhandle and Santa Fe. The railroad's
designation for the stop was Burnside, but after Wawaka residents moved
everything to the new location it was renamed Waka. The official postal address
remained Burnside until 1927. Ancestors of the Wawaka's founder - J.
N. Stump still live in the area. |
