History in a Pecan Shell

The community was formed in 1912 when one William Green of Shiner, Texas attempted to relocate German farmers from Central Texas. The proposed site was on land belonging to Wilson County (which explains the name of the community).

Green convinced a small number to people to resettle, but growth was slow - and nowhere near "steady." Still, with sporadic growth, the population reached 250 by 1930.

The 1950 census counted 400 residents which peaked in 1980 with 578 residents. Like its counterparts in neighboring counties, cotton was Wilson's main economic engine.

The 1990 census counted 568 residents which fell to 532 for the 2000 count.
