History in a Pecan Shell

Settled in the 1870s, a post office was granted in 1876. Growth was slow, but by 1892 it had reached a population of 100 (estimated). The community had several stores to serve residents and a school to teach their children. The future looked promising until the railroad (the Texas Central Railroad) bypassed it.

Many residents moved to Shinoak (which later became Gorman). The post office closed in 1906 and in time, the town was dropped from maps. Today only the cemetery is left to remember Jewel.
